The Prophet Elijah lived in the 9th century BC. He was the son of Sobak, who came from Thisbe of Galaad (Gilead) and belonged to the tribe of Aaron. When he was born, his father saw a divine vision: Two men dressed in white called the infant Elijah, and gave him a flame to eat. Afterwards, he went to Jerusalem where the priests told him, interpreting the dream, that his son would become a prophet and would judge Israel with a double-edged sword and fire. The Prophet Elijah exercised his prophetic gifts for 25 years, during the reign of Ahab. During this time, Ahab and his wife Jezebel would allow the faith to become adulterated by pagan customs. Since Elijah opposed this, Jezebel hunted after the him, forcing him to continuously be on the run or in hiding. Worth mentioning, too, in the activity of the Prophet are the many events revealing his sanctity. In one instance, he prayed and it did not rain for three and a half years and, in another, he prayed and fire came down from heaven. In yet another instance, he divided the river Jordan with his cloak to cross over to the other side. Finally, rather than dying, he was taken up into heaven on a chariot of fire. The memory of the Prophet Elijah is honoured on the 20th of July. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
