Saint Catherine was descended from a noble family of Alexandria. She received an excellent education in the teachings of the Christian faith. On account of her unwavering faith, she was sentenced to be tortured brutally in an attempt to make her deny Christ. When this did not work and she was finally beheaded, those present realised that her body was gushing milk rather than blood. The Saint’s immaculate body was then transported “on the wings of angels” to Mount Sinai where it has been kept until the present day, having remained unburied and intact for centuries. Saint Catherine is the patron saint of the Greek city of Katerini, which was named in her memory. She is also the patron saint of engineers, since she was a model of wisdom and learning in her time. Her feast is celebrated on the 25th of November. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
